Weligama is a charming fishing town located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The name “Weligama” literally means “Sandy Village,” reflecting the town’s wide, sandy bay. It is situated about 143 km from Colombo and has become a popular destination for tourists, offering several boutique hotels along the coast. Weligama is especially famous for its unique stilt fishermen, who practice a traditional fishing method perched on wooden stilts above the water. Another notable attraction is the offshore islet of Taprobane Island, home to a historic dream house built by the French Count de Maunay.
