The town sits at an elevation of about 1,868 meters above sea level and is well known for its cool climate and scenic landscapes. Nuwara Eliya is also one of the most important regions for tea production in Sri Lanka, surrounded by vast tea plantations. The town lies near Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in the country, which overlooks the surrounding area.
